When there are two vowels together in a word, they get pronounced separately:

mah-e ge-ree
Sensei
se-n-se-ee
If a word ends in i or u, a person may stress the last consonant and leave the last vowel silent:
Examples:
Ichi
can be pronounced “eech”
Roku
can be pronounced “rohk”
